IPA’s Holloway-based site, Martin Luther King Adventure Playground, is in the heart of play paradise – on the corner of Paradise Park – with an aerial runway, American swing, fire pit and huge structures for children to climb and explore. 6th April 2016 - #ThisisReal Reflecting on the importance of adventure playgrounds
Every once in a while it's important to think about why we do the things we do. In our latest #ThisisReal post, one of our members of staff reflects on the importance of adventure playgrounds and how they benefit children.
An adventure playground differs greatly from other environments where children spend most of their time. Onsite children can rearrange the world, make connections with other children and adults in ways that could not be planned with structure or direction and in ways that benefit the individual, the other children, the culture of the playground and of course the community.

2nd September 2013 – New IPA Adventure Playgrounds Leaflet Available
Adventure Playgrounds are spaces where children are free to come and go as they like, free to play how they want and free at the point of access. In this way children’s opinions are utmost, they decide how and when they play, with who and where, and let us know whether the playground is a good place to play or not. They can choose to leave if it is not good enough for their needs.
It is vital that parents understand the ethos of adventure play and support this alternative approach to the structured and controlled environments that children spend most of their time in. To help parents and carers better understand how our adventure playgrounds are run, we have put together this short leaflet.
20th August 2013 – Islington Adventure Playgrounds Protected
In 2012 Islington saw the culmination of a two year campaign led by Islington Play Association to protect the very valuable adventure playground land from being sold or built on in the future. Following strong lobbying from the charity, all 12 playgrounds have now been designated as adventure play sites for the use of Islington's children in perpetuity.
The twelve adventure playgrounds protected are: Barnard Park, Cape, Crumbles Castle, Cornwallis, Haywards, King Henry's Walk, Lumpy Hill, Martin Luther King, Three Corners, Timbuktu, Toffee Park and Waterside.
This amazing achievement was celebrated with a plaque at every site and promises that play will not be compromised. At Lumpy Hill, on Market Road, children celebrated with a BBQ, sports day, a Mystic Meg tent and arts & crafts.
Full details can be viewed in our press release here. The Islington Gazette also covered the good news, which you can read here:
13th August 2013 - Islington Play Association Celebrates National Playday at Paradise Park
Last Wednesday 7th August, hundreds of children and their families descended on Paradise Park to celebrate National Playday in Islington. All twelve of Islington’s adventure playgrounds worked together to run an exciting treasure trove of different activities and play across Paradise Park. Children and their families played across the park all day, and visitors from NCB, KIDS, the council, the police, Arsenal, Family Action, Paradise Park Children's Centre and the fire service also joined in the fun. Fun and games on the day included cardboard city building, water play, go kart building, BMX bike riding, launching water bottle rockets, bag printing, giant bubble blowing and candle making.

Playday is an event and campaign coordinated by Play England, Play Wales, Play Scotland and PlayBoard Northern Ireland. Now in its 26th year, Playday is the biggest play sector event in the UK. On Playday thousands of children and their families get out to play at hundreds of community events across the UK. As well as being a celebration of children's right to play, Playday is a campaign that highlights the importance of play in children’s lives.
Anita Grant, Director of Islington Play Association, commented, “These days health and safety concerns often stop parents from encouraging their children to play outside. But we must remember that play forms an important part of children’s lives and is vital to their growth and development.”
“Islington’s Playday celebration was a huge success, as children and their families flocked from all over the borough to celebrate and play. On behalf of all the organisations involved, I would like to thank everyone who came down to Paradise Park to celebrate with us, and all the staff and volunteers who helped make it possible.”
For more information about National Play Day, visit http://www.playday.org.uk/.
Did you join us for National Playday? If you would like to share your thoughts and/or photos of the event, you can email them to us on firstname.lastname@example.org, tweet us @IslingtonPlay or leave a message on our Islington Play Association Facebook page.
18th February 2013: Islington Play to deliver risk-benefit training to Islington organisations alongside Play England
In the next financial year, Islington Play will be working alongside Play England to deliver training to Islington organisations on risk-benefit.
Islington council recently adopted a new policy about play - Managing Risk in Play Provision. It commits the council to providing unique, exciting and adventurous play opportunities for children and young people in parks, adventure playgrounds and on housing estates.
In part this means providing play opportunities which allow children to test their abilities in challenging and stimulating play spaces, while also recognising that inevitably there will be some risk of injury - as in life in general. When assessing the risks associated with play opportunities the policy advocates that workers need to consider both the benefits and risks of an activity. This training, which will be running throughout the year, will help you make judgements about benefits and risks.
The training is free.
For more information on the policy visit www.islington.gov.uk/riskinplay

Islington Play Association was funded to deliver a £150k nature play programme in Islington in 2010. The project has been such a success that the Big Lottery and Natural England have now agreed to fund a further entire year!!
Anita Grant, Director of Islington Play Association, said:
The current project has created nature reserves on existing adventure playgrounds, and the extended project will see this sustained as well as many more organisations and parks getting the benefits. A nature play network will be developed so that skills, ideas and resources can be shared across the borough, benefitting many more children in Islington. Keep a look out for Islington Play's events and playdays all advertised on our website.

Islington Play has released the following press release:
Islington Play Association has spearheaded a campaign to provide protection for the land that children can play on in Islington.
It has now been agreed by Islington Council's executive to adopt a legal covenant called a deed of dedication to ensure that the 12 adventure playground sites cannot be built on or sold.
Islington has the second least amount of green space per head in London with more than 75% of children living without access to a garden.
Anita Grant, Director of Islington Play Association, said: "We have been campaigning for this protection for over two years.
"We have had loads of support from parents, the council, people working in the borough, the community and also from the City Bridge Trust because everyone recognises the importance of excellent play opportunities for the children of Islington.
"This is a great step for Play in Islington and a model for the rest of the country too."
In a letter to IPA, Islington Council's director of strategy and commissioning (Children's Services), Thanos Morphitis, said: "Thanks to the IPA for your work on securing the land for adventure play. You put this issue firmly on the agenda."

IPA's Treehouse project was given an award in recognition of its implementation of article 31 of the UN convention on the Rights of the child; ‘the right to play'. The reason for this great success was that the IPA project respects and promotes the article in many different ways from encouraging children to take part in an activity that has risk, working with tools and to create an outcome that they not only have fun making but can also have fun playing with afterwards.
It is a great achievement as this is international recognition and there was much competition
